Illinois Plumbing Code Practice

Threaded pipe used in plumbing systems must be properly supported to ensure stability and compliance with the Illinois Plumbing Code. The requirement for supporting threaded pipe every other story is critical because it allows for adequate support while also accommodating for expansion and contraction that can occur in pipes due to temperature changes.

Supporting threaded pipes every other story strikes a balance between minimizing the potential for sagging or bending while also avoiding the excessive use of supports that may make installation and maintenance more cumbersome. This method of support helps prevent issues such as stress on joints and leaks that can arise when pipes are not correctly secured.

If supports were required every story, it could lead to more complicated installations and added costs without providing significant benefits. Conversely, supporting pipes every third or fourth story could result in insufficient support, increasing the risk of structural failure or damage to the plumbing system. Therefore, the two-story support requirement is both practical and efficient, adhering to best practices outlined in plumbing codes.
